Daniel's Literal Translation and Commentary

Sanctification is Still a Process

"17 So if anyone is in Messiah, he becomes a new creation;  The old things pass away, behold come is coming the new. (DLT: torahtimes.org, 2 Cor. 5:17).

___

This text does not say "all things are new".  (The older MSS do not contain the words, τα παντα).  The AV "[he is a] new creation" is an interpretation against the context, which I have replaced with the words, "he becomes", which is according to the context.   The perfect tense (misnamed) is imperfective in aspect (cf. Campbell, Verbal Aspect in Biblical Greek) and intensively close up, rendered by repeating the lexeme, basically like the stem is reduplicated in Greek: "come is coming".   Not all things pass away.  Some things need only to be renewed, and some things are good and new just the way they are.   The correct rendition of this text prevents it from being used by the  Gnostic heresy, which would assert that their hearts are absolutely perfect before God.

hen their obedience of faithfulness, which cleanses their hearts.   Their faithfulness is taken from Messiah's faithfulness as the source of sanctification.   The idea behind cleansing here is the removal of sinful desires and thoughts from the heart by the power of the Holy Spirit.
