Daniel's Literal Translation and Commentary
The Renewed Covenant by Daniel Gregg
"Isaiah 45:14 Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God. (KJV).
comment1: This text is illustrative of the biblical method of prophecy, what I call temporal time compression, also called the mountain peaks principle. Two persons are composite in this text, and two time frames. They are Cambyses, the Cyrus which conquered Egypt in 525 BC and Messiah Yeshua, who as King of Kings has the title Shepherd (Cyrus), and whom before all mankind will bow. Notice, "they shall make supplication unto thee, saying Surley God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God". The context makes it clear that the Shepherd = Cyrus is deified by the nations: אך בך אל ואן עוד אפס אלהים = but in you God is, and there is no other God . The next verse continues, "Truly you are a God hiding himself ..." (cf. vs. 18, 21, 22). There could not be a louder hint (רמז) that God is hiding himself in the Cyrus prophecy. The Cyrus (Shepherd) is the Messiah. This was a point long argued by the Rabbis in order to undermine the unique Christian application of "Messiah" to Yeshua by saying such prophecies refer to earthly kings. While this is so, they have totally missed the remez, רמז, in the texts, without which nothing ultimately makes sense.
comment2: The text identifies the first Cyrus as Cambyses, who is the Persian monarch that conquered Egypt in 525 BC. He was the one who gave the initial decree to return and the initial decree to rebuild the Temple. Cambyses began to rule in 529 BC. The exile was from 597 BC to 528 BC, a space of exactly 70 years. According to Jeremiah 29:10 the 70 years applied to the middle deportation of King Jehoiachin (Jeconiah or Coniah). This is called the "exile" by Ezekiel. Counting inclusively from 597 to 528 is 70 years. (DLC: torahtimes.org)
