Daniel's Literal Translation and Commentary

The Renewed Covenant by Daniel Gregg

"And upon the first of the Sabbaths, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight" (Acts 20:7, DLT, torahtimes.org)

first...Sabbath: this might be one of the Sabbaths, a looser translation specifying one of the seven Sabbaths after Passover.  The Passover is mentioned in the preceding verse.  However, there is a text critical problem with vs. 6.  Fixing that problem would put this "first of the Sabbaths" exactly after the annual Passover Sabbath in AD 57.  That would make this meeting an annual remembrance of Yeshua's resurrection on the first Sabbath."

comment: it has often been interpreted that the meeting began after sunset, however, the case is that it began on the "first of the Sabbaths" during the day, i.e. the anniversary of the resurrection during the day portion of the Sabbath.   They ate the main meal that day before sunset, but Paul continued to teach until midnight, ready to leave in the morning.  This allows about six hours of sleep for Paul.
