"¹⁰Who among you all fears YHWH listening to the voice of His Servant, who walks surrounded by darknesses, even without brightness for him, who trusts in the Name of YHWH, and depends on his Elohim? ¹¹Behold all of you kindling a fire, who equip torches to proceed with the light of your fire, even with torches you all burnt yourselves.  From My hand is this for you—with grief you shall lie down" (DLT: torahtimes.org, Isaiah 50:10-11).

darknesses :  The Hebrew term is plural, חשכים;  it refers here to dark evil surroundings, like the valley of the shadow of death.  The plural may be intensive, "the darkness of darknesses", i.e. "deep darkness" (NET: bible.org).  "The plural indicates degree.  Darkness may refer to exile and/or moral evil" (NET, note 9, page 1352, bible.org).

 

torches : זיקות.  The NET bible cites HALOT, "flaming arrows".  The word is hapax. cf. Prov. 26:18 זקים.  The context suggests torches as the purpose of the light.

 

comment:  Notice that Isa. 50:5-6 is explicitly a רמז that refers to Yeshua.  Likewise, I think that the words in this verse concerning the torches refer to John 18:3.  They "went there with lanterns and torches and weapons" (ESV).   Perhaps זיקות, "arrows of fire" is a metaphor for all of this.
