The Real Meaning of υπο νομος
"14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the norm, but under grace" (DLT: torahtimes.org, Rom. 6:14).
norm, custom: definition no. 1, BDAG, 3rd edition. A norm for something is the fundamental meaning of nomos in Koine Greek. Paul refers to the norm of the Torah in respect to the world. The whole world is under judgment by God (Rom. 3:19). Paul also refers to the norm of sin. The control or dominion of sin is the norm for the world."
We may think about νομος the what Koine Greeks did by asking the question, "What is the customary thing?" Sin and judgment are the customary things that apply to the world. In Messiah Yeshua we are delivered from the norm, or what is customary. He paid the penalty, so the norm of condemnation does not apply. He sanctifies us and made us more righteous so that the norm of sin does not apply. That is the gospel. Messiah pays the penalty. So then people need to repent and affirm the good news. Paul does say that repentance is necessary to inherit the kingdom of God (see Gal. 5:19-21). Now if we are repenting of sin and faithfully trusting God for salvation, then we are not under the νομος.
