Abraham and Amraphel

The third dynasty of Ur (UR-III) provides us with a stunningly accurate synchronism with a watershed moment in the life of Abraham. The war described in Genesis 14, called the battle of Siddim, aligns perfectly with the first year of Amar-sin, king of Ur. This is the same king known as Amraphel king of Shinar in Genesis 14:1. Not only this, but the alignment is so precise that it rules out every version of biblical chronology except for one. And that is the chronology referred to here.

There are two sides to this match up. On the one side we have the biblical chronology, and on the other we have the chronology discovered by historians, astronomers, mathematicians, and archaeologists, all working together, to bring Us an established chronology for UR-III. And for this chronology, I shall have to make a very slight adjustment, which in the history of this period will appear to be a very minor adjustment of not more than 2 years. But I will show how all of the wiggle room is completely removed.

In order to stack up the biblical chronology side of this equation with UR-III, I need to mention the pre-requirements, that is the foundational understandings, that have to be in place before the reader can reap the full benefits of this article. Then I have to do something similar for the UR-III chronology.

On the biblical chronology side, we have to first start with the established links between the end of the kingdom of Judah and the Neo-Babylonian Empire (7th Century BC). This is the last outpost where there is a consensus between Christians scholars, academics, and in published material for a true and accurate chronology. I should mention some minor disagreements with this that are not the consensus. Traditional Jews delete 165 years or so from the Persian Period in order to make their anti-Christian version of Daniel 9 work (5th Century BC). And some Christians in the past have gone along with them in suggesting that the Canon of Claudius Ptolemy inflates the period (747 BC to Roman Times), because they wanted to connect Daniel 9 to Cyrus. These non consensus views are all based on misunderstandings or corruptions of Daniel 9. They do nothing to resolve their contradiction with established history back to the beginning of the Neo-Babylonian Empire.

The reason the Neo-Babylonian Empire is so solidly established is that that its kings decided to carefully and completely record numerous observations of the moon and planets, carefully dated with regnal years of their kings. By using our modern science of astronomical retro-calculation we can establish the absolute dates of these observations. Not only that, but I point out that the Scripture completely agrees with this conclusion. At no period before the Neo-Babylonian Empire does Scripture resort to dating events using any outside system or nation foreign to Israel. Before this period, the closest we get to any sort of synchronism is the mention of the name of a foreign king who had dealings with Israel.

So if we hold that the author of Scripture is truthful, then we must also hold that the author of Scripture is validating and underwriting the accuracy of the Neo-Babylonian dating system by the extent to which it is used and incorporated into the Biblical timeline.

So, as I said, the Neo-Babylonian match up with the biblical timeline is the last outpost of truthful history for which there is a world consensus among scholars. Before this period everything falls into chaos and darkness with scholars dividing into factions with endless disputes. And only a correct understanding of biblical chronology can settle these disputes. Or to put it another way, if the disputants were completely honest with their secular research, they would soon find it agreeing with the biblical chronology.

The first biblical item that must be noticed is to restore the 52 years that Thiele deleted from the biblical timeline by his reliance on Assyria. There are other essays on this topic. The next item that we must pass through is to realize that the 480 years in 1 Kings 6:1 are given by a figure of speech, namely the "land of Egypt" is used to mean "the house of bondage," and for this reason the period of the Judges should not be shortened and overlapped so as to reduce the years from the true 614 year figure; again there are other essays on this topic. Then we must get past the error of placing Israel in Egypt for an entire 430 years. They were there for 210 years; 400 years dates from Isaacs birth, and the 430 date from the settlement of Terah leaving Ur. So these are the requirements for placing Abraham in the correct position. All these topics are discussed in other essays.

In his 1913 work, The Romance of Bible Chronology Martin Anstey followed all of these principles and ended up in 1612 BC for the Exodus and 2042 BC for the start of the 430 years. There are only two mistakes to be corrected! He should not have argued Ussher's point about the 400 years associated with Isaac beginning when Isaac was weaned, which is based on dating the 430 years from Haran instead of Ur, as it should be (cf. Gen. 15:7). And he should not have missed the second Philistine servitude that lasted 20 years. Applying this last figure corrects the Exodus date to 1632 BC and the departure from Ur to 2062, which is exactly as matters stand in this chronology. I only mention this to show that the chronology presented here is not a rabbit pulled out of a hole, and indeed there are many who manufacture stuff out of the imaginations of their own heart that have no connection to real truth. You can count on religious zealots to fan the prejudices of true piety and then bait and switch to spoon feed a lying narrative.

So this is how the biblical chronolgy stacks up. We arrive at a date for the battle of Siddim sometime in years 3 to 10 of the ten years mentioned in Genesis 16:3. As we shall see from the UR-III side of this equation, the exact year of the battle of Siddim is going to be pinned down.

To establish the identity between Amar-Suen and Amraphel, it is helpful to discuss the linguistic connection. Even so, I must point out that the case does not depend solely on this leg; the chronological alignment is far more important. The Sumerian cuneiform logogram for Amar-Suen means "young bull" or "calf" (the Amar part) , and the moon god (the Suen part). Suen is a personal name for the Moon god, and not a generic word for "moon." But it so happens that the logographic signs used an alternative "Amar-Sin"; In this case "Sin" was an alternative indication of "Suen", represented by the number "30" in the logogram. This number 30 served to associate "Sin" with the moon. However, the "30" (three stacked wedge marks) was easily confused with the phonetic syllabogram for PIL, BIL, or PEL. This syllabogram is called the NE sign. However, there is reason to believe that the Hebrew author of Genesis 14, which would be Isaac, deliberately chose to read a "30" sign in his source material as "NE"; By doing this he de-sacralized the pagan god ending of Amar-Sin, and made it meaningless, that is "young calf" + meaningless sound, or he could have made it mean PELE with the (Hebrew) meaning of "the wonderful young bull", "the young calf is a miracle," or "wonderful calf." This would stay within attested Hebrew meanings without relying on proto-semitic speculations, e.g. the suggestions that PEL could mean "falling" (PLL) or "ruin" (PAL). As I stated before, I am steering clear of theoretical constructs like protosemitic because it is based on evolution of Hebrew rather than devoltion of the original Hebrew into related languages. The sense of "wonderful calf" gives the name of the king an insultingly sarcastic flavor instead of invoking the Moon god.

What might the general Canaanite readers see in Isaac's text, or his own descendants? They would naturally read the Semitic roots as "the wonderful saying": imrah pele. But knowing Isaac's secret, it would be "amar the wonderful" or "the calf is wonderful", the intended insulting phrase in light of Amar-Sin running home with his tail between his legs without any loot or slaves. Where did Isaac learn to be such a clever scribe? Probably in the school of Melchizedek, where scribes worked and languages were learned. This King of Salem probably possesed a diplomatic library with vassal treaties and historical chronicles, and most likely housed copies of the original Genesis tablets bequeathed to the school.

Let us now describe the connection of Shinar to Sumer. The Sumerian name of their land was: Ki-en-gir. The name Sumer comes from the Akkadians, who spoke a language related to the original Hebrew. Their word was Šumeru. Please note this was pronounced shoo-may-roo, with the "sh." This Akkadian name migrated west during the Early Bronze, the period just before UR-III. The nasal consonants "m" and "n" switched places, and in Amorite dialects this became a regional variant Šanhar (pronounced Shan-har) or Sanhara. The final step occurred when the heh was dropped in Hebrew, i.e. Shanar. This change in the title of Sumer is confirmed in the Amarna Letters, where that very southern territory of Mesopotamia is called Šanhar. The shift to the vocalization, Shinar is a dialectal shift from early Canaanite Hebrew to late Hebrew.

The conclusion then, is that both the name of this king in Genesis 14 and his location are in agreement with the surrounding facts.

I now turn to the chronology of the UR-III dynasty. The consensus is the Middle Chronology, and as we shall see this is founded on astronomical solutions to the Venus Tablets on one leg, and extensive synchronisms of economic Tablets and king lists, provided for Larsa, Isin, and the First (Amorite) Dynasty of Babylon. These Venus solutions fix the Amorite dynasty of Babylon. But my case is not just based the Venus tablet solution, but also on four eclipses that frame the UR-III period, one before year 1 of Ur-Nammu, one in the first year of Ur-Nammu, one in the 48th year of Shulgi, the Patricide Eclipse, and one associated with the fall of UR-III in the 24th year of Ibbi-sin.

I should emphasize that the UR-III Middle chronology is built on compilations of year names through the cities of Larsa and Isin and the Amorite Dynasty of Babylon. While this data column was originally anchored at the 1646 Venus solution, the 1638 Venus solution has gained ground among scholars. And while the Middle Chronology was originally built on a Vensus solution only, there is now non astronomical evidence that affirms it, at least enough to rule out low and high chronologies.

The 1638 Venus solution fits the known evidence best. This is because the seasonal alignment of Nisan in the Amorite Calendar fits the spring equinox correctly for solution 1638, but it does not fit correctly for solution 1646. Furthermore, the data in the Venus tablets turn chaotic in year 12 of Ammisaduga and are at peak chaos in year 13. This is consistent with the 1628 BC date for the eruption of the Alaskan volcano Aniakchak II, which shows its sulfur spike in the ice core rings for 1628 BC. This same sulphur is what caused the observational chaos in the Venus Tablets. This gives a ready explanation for the character of the data in the tablets.

I provide solutions for two astronomical records relating to Amorite Babylon in 1594 and 1593 BC. Since the solution 1646 implies a 1595 fall of Babylon, the solutions to the eclipses fall after what they were supposed to predict. Since this is a contradiction of the use of an "omen", the fall must have happened in 1587 BC instead.

One additional piece of evidence comes into play. The wars of Canaan wiped out the western arm of the Amorite hegemony in the Ancient Near East. The war against the Amorites began in 1593.T and the wars against the Canaanites were initially concluded after six years in the land in 1586.N. This opperation of Israel completely wrecked the morale of Amorite Babylon. It furthermore encouraged all the enemies of the Amorites. The Hittite king Mursili I took advantage of all of this and sacked and plundered Babylon. Then the Kassites moved into the vacuum left behind when Mursili I returned to his own country. The clean up of the Amorite dominion was so extensive that the Kassites had to divide their kingdom, one ruling from Aram of the Two Rivers, and exerting itself west and south, and the other ruling from Babylon and fighting wars against enemies in southern Babylonia.

If we stack up the First Dynasty of Babylon, and the Larsa dynasty from a fall of Babylon in 1587 BC, then we come to the first year of the first king of Larsa in 2018.N/2017.N. This is year one of Naplanum. In the standard Middle Chronology model (solution 1646) this date is eight years higher than in the one I have proven to be correct (solution 1638). But strangely enough, my date for the fall of UR-III (2005.N) and the standard model (2004 BC) is only one year different. As a result the standard model is forced to admit that the entire reign of Naplanum overlaps the reign of the last king of Ur III, Ibbi-Sin. This is to suggest that Naplanum was starving out UR for his entire reign. But the reality is that the overlap is only 13 years, and not 21.

Why didn't the Standard Middle Chronology school just bump the fall of Ur back in time by another 8 years? The reason for this is that internal documents from the Craft Archive in Isin reveal that Ibbi-Erra rebelled in the 10th year of Ibbi-Suen, the last king of Ur III. Two years later Larsa's king also declared his kingdom independent of Ur. But it is evident that Larsa's king at this time was subject to the dominion of Isin. The Larsa king list chronology is presented complete and unaltered from the consensus in the charts. Rim-Sin siezed Isin in his 29th year, the year name referring to the event of the previous year. Then after Rim-Sin reigned 60 years, Hammurabi siezed Larsa in his 29th year, the year name of the 30th year being for an event in the previous year.

There are some adjustments in the parallel chronology of Isin that have to be made, and these are shown in the charts. The reason these adjustments need to be made are because the data for Isin are less secure than Larsa. Synchronisms with Larsa show where the adjustments need to be made. I will detail them here:

The Larsa king list must begin shortly after Ishbi-Erra. Iddin-Dagan must rule near the end of the reign of Emisum. I set this in year 21. Lipit-Ishtar must end his 11 year reign in the 6th year of Gungunum. Ur-Ninurta must be shortened to 22 years. Erra-imitti must leave the throne of Isin in the 23rd year of Sumu-El. A period of civil war or interregnum, involving four kings, and possible domination by Larsa's king over Isin follows for 9 years. Zambiya must leave the throne of Isin in his 3rd year, and the 5th year of Sin-Iqisham. Rim-Sin must overthrow Isin in the 23rd year of Damiq-ilishu.

Rim-Sin perfectly synchronizes with Hammurabi. And the year names and chrononology of the first dynasty of Babylon are secure from Hammurabi until the Venus solution in the reign of Ammisaduga. This solution is shown to be 1638 BC by lining of the months of the Ventus Tablets with the spring equinox. All of this translates into the fall of the Ur III dynasty in 2006.N BC/2005.N BC. This is two years before the standard view 2004.N/2003.N for the fall of Ur III.

We can now proceed to verify the position of the Ur III timeline using astronomical records from the EAE. The Ur III duration is exactly 108 years based on the year names. This consists of five kings, Ur-Nammu (18 yrs), Shulgi (48 yrs), Amar-Sin (9 yrs), Shu-Sin (9 yrs), Ibbi-Sin (24 yrs).

It should be noted that the Middle Chronology is so named because there are High and Low chronologies. The High and Low chronologies are entirely motivated by attempts to make astronomical observations work with standard calculations. But the Low and High chronologies turn the whole history of the Ancient Near East in the third millennium into a complete disaster. The Middle Chronology does not attempt to, and cannot make the astronomical synchronisms work. It is based on careful historiography. So this is a case of choose your poison: ruin the careful historiography to make the astronomy work, or ignore the astronomy and choose careful historiography.

The solution to this dilemma is in Joshua 10. In 1592 BC, the sun stopped moving through the sky for 12 hours. The moon "stood," appearing to rise 6 degrees during this 12 hours. This miracle requires a correction in astronomical calculations before 1592 BC. The correction is deployed by offsetting the standard delta T calculation by -43200 seconds, which is 12 hours. The Stellarium software allows the correction to be made under the "custom" delta T option. This correction changes things most dramatically with respect to the position of the moon in the sky when a solar or lunar eclipse happens. A lunar eclipse visible from one side of the earth under the standard calculation will become invisible when the correction is made, and will become visible on the other side of the earth.

For the 24th year of Ibbi-Sin, I calculate EAE 21 for month XII, day 14, using Recension B, the Zenith/Midnight Clear Variant for March 25th, 2005 BC. The omen is, "The prediction is given for the king of the world: the destruction of Ur." This eclipse lines up perfectly. Now I am not endorsing the use of eclipses for prognostication. I am just reporting to you the Sumerian interpretation of this eclipse. Apparently the eclipse was real and the observation accurate. And that is all we need, because the historiographic reconstruction and the eclipse both land right were we need it to be!

Perhaps the most exacting and difficult eclipse to calculate is the Patricide eclipse (EAE 20, III.14, Simanu, Lunar Eclipse). The parameters are as follows, "It passes (misses) the first watch, and [the beginning penumbra just] touches [the end of] the middle watch. It [sets] half eclipsed, [chased by the sun]. The king of Ur, his [chosen] son will wrong him, and the son who wronged his father, Shamash will catch him. He will die in the mourning place of his father. The son of the king who was not named for the kingship will seize the throne."

The traditional association between the death of Shulgi and the Patricide Eclipse dates from the Old Babylonian Period (ca. 2000—1600 BC). Validating the historicity of this tradition depends on a successful retro calculation of the Eclipse Omen. I calculate this for July 17, 2048 BC. Examining this in Stellarium, with the delta T offset, shows that it matches the exact description of the eclipse.

The next eclipse is the Ur-Nammu Death Omen (Recension A, Morning Watch Clear Variant). In the Ancient Near East, a death omen at the start of a reign was an acceptable interpretation. And that is how the scholars treat this matter for EAE 20, Tablet IV. This eclipse calculates for July 15/16 2113 BC.

The final eclipse is for the fall of Guti, EAE Tablet IV. This falls on July 26, 2114 BC. (Fall of Guti Omen; Recension A: Evening/Middle Watch Clear Variant).

The alignment of these eclipses with their respective dates in terms of the reigns of the Ur III kings follows both the ancient tradition and the modern scholarly consensus. The success here in calculating them out, and especially the Patricide Eclipse, proves beyond a reasonable doubt that the tradition has translated the facts to us correctly, and that the modern Middle Chronology reconstruction of Ur III is correct with only a slight adjustment needed to match the eclipses. After making the 2 year adjustment, one can be confident that the chronology is correct down to the exact years.

Now that we have established this, it is clear that Amar-Sin was not expected to be the king of Ur or Shinar. But he became king in the 48th year of Shulgi. And the first year of his reign began exactly in the spring of 2047 BC. This year aligns with the 10th year of Abraham in Canaan. In the first months of his reign, Amar-Sin had to put down a local revolt. By the time he and his Elamite overlord reached Canaan it was coming into summer in 2047 BC. And this was the 10th year (cf. Gen. 16:3). After this 10th year, the battle of Siddim was already over with. So the event is constrained both from above by the Ur III chronology and from below by the biblical chronology, which locks the battle into precisely 2047 BC, in the first year of the reign of Amar-Sin.


Follow Up Discussion

It should be noted that Amraphel was previously mistakenly identified with Hammurabi. But as research has gone on, as shown in this essay, matching Hammurabi with Amraphel is an absolute impossibility given what we know now. I should mention that David Rohl makes the correct identification, even though I do not agree with his chronological revision of Egyptian chronology. Another scholar is Dr. John J. Bimson, with whom I am not familiar. There is also Dr. Charles Aling.

How did the king of Elam get to Canaan with his allies? At this time there was a heavily fortified trade route running east of the Jordan River and the Dead Sea. It was actively used during the Early Bronze IV and Middle Bronze. (refer to William F. Albright).

What is the simple solution to the Larsa and Isin synchronism problem? It should be noted the Isin king list cannot be synchronized with the Larsa king list without placing a space between Erra-Imitti and Enlil-Bani, because Erra-Imitti cannot go past the 23rd year of Sumu-El, and Zamiya has to come alonside Sin-Iqisham. Erra-imitti famously died eating hot porridge after abdicating during a 'substitute-king' ritual. His subsitute Enlil-Bani, refused to give up the throne. As a result the kingdom of Isin was thrown into chaos and a multi year civil war involving and two other obscure kings that the official lists skip over, but whom are known from the archaeology.

Do the specialists acknowledge that shortening the Larsa chronology in this later period is extremely difficult? AI, "Yes, specialists widely acknowledge that shortening the Larsa chronology in its later period is extraordinarily difficult, if not entirely impossible, without breaking the historical framework. Unlike periods of collapse where king lists contain blank spaces or questionable numbers, the late Isin-Larsa period was highly bureaucratic. Every single year of rulers like Gungunum (27 years), Abisare (11 years), and Sumu-el (29 years) has a known, distinct "year name" used by ancient scribes to date receipts, marriages, and court cases. There are simply no missing text gaps where a specialist can logically slice out 10 or 20 years.

Do scholars favoring a 1646 Venus solution face a problem when they line up Ishbi-Erra to the 10th year of Ibbi-sin, and then the Larsa chronology extends backwards 8 years before Ishbi-Erra's rule begins? AI,"Yes, scholars who favor the 1646 BCE Venus solution (the backbone of the Middle Chronology) face an absolute mechanical and geographical crisis when attempting to reconcile the Ur III-to-Isin transition with the Larsa King List"; "This specific configuration creates what chronologists refer to as a chronological paradox. By locking the start of Ishbi-Erra's independent accounting to the 10th year of Ibbi-Sin, the timeline forces an overlap where the city-state of Larsa is mathematically required to have declared independence 8 years before the Third Dynasty of Ur even began destabilizing, and years before Ishbi-Erra set up an independent kingdom and strangled Ur."

"Scholars clinging to 1646 BCE are forced to treat Naplanum's entire 21-year block as a 'ghost reign'—essentially arguing that his regnal years were counted retroactively by later Larsa scribes to build a false sense of antiquity, meaning his independent rule didn't actually happen when the math says it did.

If the Venus solution is lowered 8 years to 1638 BC, is it much easier to add ~8 years to the Isin line to raise Ishbi-Erra back up to the 10th year of Ibbi-Suen? AI,"Yes, dropping the Venus solution by 8 years from 1646 BCE to 1638 BCE (the option often termed the "Low-Middle" Chronology) makes it mathematically much simpler to reconcile the early Larsa King List with the Isin line."

Since the discovery of the Venus tablets, how long has the 1638 solution been known, and been recognized as a highly competitive option? "The 1638 BCE Venus solution—often classified as the "Lower-Middle Chronology"—has been known as a mathematically viable option for over 40 years, and has been recognized as a highly competitive, if not superior, astronomical solution since the early 1980s." Paraphrasing AI, "The tablets were excavated by Austen Henry Layard at Nineveh in 1850. In 1912 Franz Xaver Kugler first identified that the tablet recorded observations from the reign of Ammisaduqa. Early 20th-century scholars focused heavily on wider 56/64-year Venus cycles, which yieled classic High (1702 BC), Middle (1646 BC), and Low (1582 BC) baselines.

"The 1638 BCE option moved from a theoretical math quirk to a formidable, highly competitive candidate in 1982, following a landmark study by statistician and chronologist Peter Huber (along with a team of Harvard astronomers). Huber ran the raw text entries through rigorous computerized atmospheric visibility and text-corruption models. He demonstrated that because of the fundamental 8-year cyclical nature of Venus, the data yields not three, but four distinct solutions. He split the traditional "Middle Chronology" bracket into two distinct variants: 1646 BC and 1638 BC. The Verdict: Huber's statistical models actually concluded that 1638 BC offered a cleaner, more probabilistically sound fit to the atmospheric visibility conditions of ancient Babylon than the standard 1646 BCE model.

"Despite Huber proving its astronomical superiority in 1982, the 1638 BCE solution spent a couple of decades overshadowed by the deeply entrenched 1646 BCE "Standard Middle Chronology" baseline. Mainstream textbooks resisted shifting all their tables down by a meager 8 years just for an astronomical fine-tuning.

"However, over the last 15 years, it has surged in competitiveness. Modern archaeoastronomers and researchers have heavily re-analyzed Huber's data using advanced twilight-visibility modeling. They continually conclude that 1638 BCE remains the single best astronomical fit of the entire bunch. Today, it is recognized as the ultimate "escape valve" for historians who want to preserve the Middle Chronology structure while solving the exact Ur III/Isin/Larsa synchronization bottleneck you described.

What does the tree ring data show? "The most significant takeaway from the tree-ring records is what they disprove. Proponents of the standard Low Chronology (placing the fall of Babylon at 1531 BCE) or Ultra-Low Chronology (1499 BCE) rely on compressing the timeline.

"The tree-ring sequences are unbroken, physical tallies of years. They prove that the physical time elapsed between the early Bronze Age palaces and the late Bronze Age collapse is too long to accommodate the Low Chronologies. There are simply too many physical tree rings in the record to allow the historical timeline to be shrunk that far.

Note: the use of tree-ring data in this period still leaves room for climate and biological programs that explain the exaggeration of ultra long Bristlecone Pine chronologies.

Has the Kültepe data served to support the 1638 Venus solution? AI, "The archaeological site of Kültepe (ancient Kanesh) in Turkey provides the foundational timbers for the Anatolian Master Tree-Ring Chronology. The data from this specific site heavily reinforces the 1638 BCE model, which is often termed the "Lower-Middle Chronology."

"When dendrochronologists analyzed the Kültepe tree rings alongside other regional timbers, they discovered a massive, distinct climate anomaly (stunted growth and severe frost rings) occurring in exactly 1628/1627 BCE. This correlates to global atmospheric disturbances, likely from the Minoan eruption of Thera."

Could the volcanic signature be alternatively blamed on Aniakchak II? AI, "Yes, the volcanic climate signature can absolutely be blamed on Aniakchak II, and according to the latest breakthroughs in high-resolution geo-forensics, it officially has been.

"The Kültepe Timber Anchors Remain Unchanged: The physical tree rings from the Kültepe palaces do not care which volcano erupted; they only record that a severe hemispheric cooling event happened in 1628 BCE. Because the absolute calendar dating of those tree rings is locked in by carbon-14 wiggle matching, the timeline still perfectly anchors Shamshi-Adad I and the Old Assyrian line exactly where the 1638 BCE Venus model predicts it should be.

Could the Thera eruption, in fact, have occurred earlier in 1632 BC dumping its ash from the atmosphere very quickly, and leaving no lasting Sulphur induced climate crisis? AI, "The Physics: Unlike high-sulfur eruptions (like Aniakchak II or Tambora), which form massive, long-lasting stratospheric aerosol veils that trigger volcanic winters, Thera’s primary destructive mechanism was localized."

"It produced massive physical ash, pyroclastic flows, and tsunamis, but its global atmospheric sulfur footprint was relatively light. It is entirely plausible that it did not cause a decade-long climate collapse, explaining why it left no unmistakable, massive global frost-ring marker.

Could the Minoan elites have fled to Egypt, to the court of Apepi, abandoning Crete and the buried pottery, and then later reproduced the same type of pottery in Egypt? "If Thera erupted in 1632 BCE, burying LM IA pottery, but Minoan refugees arrived in Egypt and kept producing that identical pottery style for another 50 to 60 years (into the early 18th Dynasty), it would solve the single greatest dispute in Mediterranean history:

"The idea that elite Minoan artists or refugees fled to the Delta region of Egypt during the reign of the Hyksos Pharaoh Apepi (Second Intermediate Period) is strongly supported by archaeology:

"At the Hyksos capital of Tell el-Dab'a (Avaris), archaeologists excavated spectacular, genuine Minoan-style bull-leaping frescoes painted directly onto the palace walls. These were not Egyptian copies of Minoan art. The chemical composition of the lime plaster and the wet buon fresco technique prove they were executed by native Minoan master artists working inside Egypt.

"The Clash: It explains why science (radiocarbon dating) says the eruption happened early (c. 1630–1600 BCE), while traditional archaeology says it happened late (c. 1550–1500 BCE) because they find "post-eruption" style pottery in later Egyptian strata.

"The Solution: If the pottery styles experienced a "technological freeze" or were curated and reproduced by exiled communities in Egypt, the chronological gap between the physical eruption and the Egyptian historical records completely evaporates.
